Purpose

The Director of Benefits proactively leads all strategic, administrative and financial aspects of health and welfare plans (medical, dental, vision, life, disability, etc.), equity and retirement programs (401k) offered. Ensures plan compliance and delivery obligations. Supervises and develops internal benefits team.

Duties & Responsibilities

  • Manage the strategic direction and design of benefit programs for the organization, including annual programs, vendors and performance metrics review.
  • Ensure technical compliance with all legal, regulatory and financial requirements associated with benefit plans. Includes research of technical requirements as they arise and determine/direct implementation of appropriate actions and processes to address in a cost-efficient manner.
  • Manage overall benefits team accountabilities including team workflow. Direct and monitor individual development activities to ensure capacity and capability to meet future needs and challenges while maintaining high level of engagement and focus on customer service.
  • Oversee the annual enrollment process, including premium-setting, communications, and reporting.  Provides customer-service for communications and deliver problem resolution.
  • Ensure effective partnerships with external vendors, including brokers, consultants, insurance companies and other strategic partners. Conduct quarterly review meetings to ensure compliance of plans /strategies with legal requirements and overall intent.
  • Support the CEO, Chief Operating Officer, SVP of HR/Head of HR, and various other executives with analyses and ad hoc projects, including facilitation of Admin Board and Welfare Plan Committee (WPC) activities related to benefits.

Required Skills/Qualifications

  • Comprehensive technical knowledge of a broad array of benefit programs, including medical, dental, vision, life/disability, EAP, voluntary plans and retirement. Includes understanding/application of regulatory and legal requirements, such as health reform and Department of Labor regulations.
  • Must be a strong communicator in a variety of settings, including executive team meetings, committee/board presentations and at the associate level. This includes a well-developed written communication style, as well as ability to relate to/consider appropriate aspects of each audience when speaking.
  • Ability to drive change and engage others in the journey effectively.
  • Must have financial/business acumen to ensure efficient delivery of programs aligned with business objectives and capabilities.
  • Hands-on style which focuses on interaction and development of others to build capability of team; a collaborative and inclusive approach that seeks out knowledge and input from others.
  • Ability to think strategically and implement tactically - strong project management focus and skills.

  • Hiring/firing related to benefit staff
  • Contract review/approval for vendors and legal requirements

Minimum Requirements

            Education Level: Four-year college education

            Job Related/Industry Experience: 8 to 10 years
